For centuries, a night in the Student Jail was a rite of passage for Heidelberg students.

Where to Stay in Heidelberg

Expensive

Der Europäische Hof-Hotel Europa Heidelberg’s best hotel, and one of the finest in Germany, seems to do everything right and makes it all seem effortless. Lounges are comfortably plush and attractive; guest rooms, ranging over an old wing and a newer extension, are enormous and beautifully furnished with a nice mix of old-fashioned comfort and contemporary accents, lit by crystal chandeliers and equipped with sumptuous marble baths. Service is unfailingly attentive while unobtrusive and personable. A multilevel, rooftop spa includes a large indoor pool and state-of-the-art gym, and the wood-paneled grill room serves sophisticated French fare. You’ll pay a bit more to stay here than in other Heidelberg lodgings, but you’ll be staying in such style as you won’t find many other places in the world.

Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 1. www.europischerhof.com . 06221/5150. 118 units. 148€–384€ double. Breakfast included. Parking 19€. Tram: Bismarktplatz. Amenities: 2 restaurants; bar; babysitting; concierge; health club & spa; indoor pool; room service; Wi-Fi (free).

Moderate

Hackteufel A guesthouse right in the heart of the Altstadt offers spruce and comfortable lodgings between the Marktplatz and the Old Bridge. Each of the 12 cozy rooms is different, but most are extra large and embellished with wood floors, beams, dormers, and plenty of nice traditional wood furnishings; number 12 is a cross-beamed garret with a castle view and number 8 is a commodious suite with a terrace. Downstairs, a handsome restaurant and wine bar serves snacks and drinks throughout the day and traditional specialties at mealtimes.

Steingasse 7. www.hackteufel.de . 06221/905380. 12 units. 120€–170€ double. Buffet breakfast included. Amenities: Restaurant, bar; Wi-Fi (free). Bus 33.

HIP Hotel As if Heidelberg isn’t transporting enough, these over-the-top yet extremely comfortable accommodations are done up in the style of cities around the world. Paris surrounds you in the loft-like, red-velvet ambiance of a posh garret, while Zermatt comes with log walls and a Technicolor alpine scene beyond the cute, gingham curtained window. In Malolo (that’s an island in Fiji) you can walk on pure white sand and drift off to sleep to the sound of crashing waves. Excellent beds and snazzy plumbing ensure this place is more than just a fun gimmick, though you might need some serious mental adjustment to relax in Down Under, where tables, drapes, and doors are all upside down.

Hauptstrasse 115. www.hip-hotel.de . 06221/20879. 27 units. 150€–240€ double. Buffet breakfast included. Amenities: Restaurant; bar; room service; Wi-Fi (free). Bus: 31, 32, or 35.

Hirschgasse Many stories surround this lovely guest house on the north side of the Neckar. One spring day in 1472, as one tale goes, singer, poet, and doctor Johann von Soest was enjoying a beer in the garden when he set eyes on the young lady of the house, was bedazzled, and asked for her hand in marriage on the spot. In the 19th century, the house became a famous Mensuren, or fencing, fraternity that included Count Bismark; it hosted famous feasts, fueled by as many (as one participant boasted) as 78 measures of beer.
